    POSITION SUMMARY
    The Special Education Teacher will design and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), 504 plans, and Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) to support students with diverse learning needs. This role involves collaboration with general education teachers, support staff, and families to ensure that students make academic progress while also developing social and emotional skills aligned with First Peoples Principles of Learning.

    DUTIES OF POSITION

    • Develop and implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) tailored to students' unique needs.

    • Design and implement 504 plans to provide appropriate accommodations and supports for students.

    • Develop and oversee Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) to support students with behavioral challenges.

    • Collaborate with the Multi-Tiered Support System (MTSS) committee to ensure students receive necessary interventions.

    • Adapt and modify curriculum and instructional strategies to meet the needs of students with disabilities.

    • Utilize evidence-based practices to support students' academic, social, and behavioral development.

    • Collaborate with general education teachers, parents, specialists, and administrators to provide appropriate accommodations and supports.

    • Monitor and assess student progress, adjusting instructional strategies as needed.

    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records on student progress, IEPs, and other required documentation.

    • Foster a supportive and inclusive classroom environment that promotes student success and independence.

    • Implement positive behavior support strategies and interventions.

    • Participate in professional development and stay informed about best practices in special education.

    • Provide inclusive Push-In accommodations.

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

    • Strong understanding of special education laws, including IDEA and Section 504.

    • Ability to develop and implement IEPs, 504 plans, and BIPs effectively.

    • Knowledge of differentiated instruction and strategies for diverse learners.

    • Experience with data collection, progress monitoring, and assessment tools.

    • Ability to manage and de-escalate challenging behaviors using evidence-based interventions.

    • Strong collaboration skills to work with interdisciplinary teams, including teachers, families, and specialists.

    • Experience with assistive technology and adaptive learning materials.

    • Proficiency in maintaining accurate records and documentation.

    • Effective communication skills for engaging with students, families, and colleagues.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Pass reference and required fingerprint background/criminal checks.

    • Hold a valid Washington State teaching certificate & Special Education endorsement

    • Special consideration will be given to candidates who represent the target communities of WIHS, are bilingual, or hold multiple endorsement areas.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    • Indoor and outdoor environments - will attend whole school field trips as applicable.

    WORK SCHEDULE
    This position is to replace our current special education teacher. A contract for the 2025-2026 school year will depend on an evaluation from the Director of Education & Learning at the end of the 2024-2025 school year. The contract begins in April 2025.

    WHATCOM INTERGENERATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

    POSITION SUMMARY: 

    The High School Counselor at WIHS has two primary responsibilities: supporting students' mental and emotional health and serving as an academic and career counselor. In their mental health role, the Counselor oversees all mental health services at the school, including individual and group counseling, documenting and scheduling services, assisting in creating IEP/504 plans, and making referrals to external resources. They also collaborate with the MTSS team to implement restorative practices related to drug and alcohol issues. As an academic and career counselor, the Counselor helps students navigate their educational pathways, set academic goals, explore career opportunities, and plan for post-secondary success.

    DUTIES: 

    • Guides students on academic, educational, and social/emotional challenges.

    • Stays accessible and strives to understand each student under their care.

    • Delivers individual counseling and responsive support services for students and their families regarding mental health and academic issues.

    • Facilitates guidance counseling through organized activities in small groups or classrooms, sharing essential educational, social, and school information.

    • Conducts workshops for parents focused on common student needs.

    • Engages in consultations and communicates with parents, teachers, administrators, and relevant entities regarding specific student academic and educational issues.

    • Offers feedback and suggests appropriate actions and solutions tailored to each student’s academic and educational requirements.

    • Participates in the MTSS Team to identify students who may require targeted or intensive services, coordinating efforts with external behavioral health specialists.

    • Aids students and parents in comprehending school rules and protocols.

    • Collaborates with behavioral health specialists to develop and implement support systems for students.

    • Supports and attends relevant student activities and events.

    • Creates a range of written materials to document activities, update newsletters, and ensure compliance with state regulations.

    • Works alongside families, students, healthcare providers, and other agencies to promote necessary treatment, gather information, and adhere to legal requirements.

    • Leads the drug and alcohol response committee, offering support for drug, alcohol, and vaping issues to students and communicating with their families. 

    • Reports suspected child abuse cases to ensure student safety and legal compliance while providing annual training on CPS reporting procedures for all staff. Additionally, performs related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient operation of the work unit.

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

    • Develop and sustain a comprehensive school counseling program.

    • Willingness and capability to engage with students from diverse backgrounds and discuss potentially sensitive subjects.

    • Skill in organizing tasks and managing time to meet various deadlines while communicating effectively with students, parents, school administrators, and staff.

    • Uphold confidentiality and maintain respectful boundaries with students, staff, families, and the community.

    • Serve as a liaison among home, school, and community resources.

    • Familiarity with WA State graduation requirements.

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Master’s Degree in Counseling/Guidance, Education, or Social Work

    • Minimum of 1 year of school counseling or teaching experience or alternative 

    • Experience in health education

    POSITION SUMMARY

    School nursing prioritizes students' physical, emotional, and academic health. The school nurse oversees all health services, including managing medical care plans, maintaining accurate records, supporting IEP/504 plans, and promoting daily health and wellness. Additionally, the nurse will foster relationships with students and families through regular communication, organize necessary staff training mandated by the state, and assist with drug and alcohol-related issues.

    DUTIES OF POSITION

    • Administers basic health care and first aid to provide appropriate care for ill, medically fragile, injured students, staff, and volunteers. 

    • Responds to medical emergencies to address immediate safety concerns. 

    • Directs department functions to prioritize project deadlines and ensure optimal time, resources, and personnel utilization. 

    • Maintains health care plans, medical emergency cards, and immunization records for all site students to ensure compliance with state laws and provide necessary information for intra-district transfer of records when needed. 

    • Monitors all student medications administered at school as a physician prescribes to ensure compliance with state laws. 

    • Trains staff on medication administration as applicable.

    • Prepares various written materials (e.g., quantity reports, student activities, and correspondence) to document activities, provide written references, and convey information compliant with state laws. 

    • Collaborates with families, students, health care providers, and other agencies to promote necessary treatment, secure information, and comply with legal requirements. 

    • Leads the drug and alcohol response committee, offering support for drug, alcohol, and vaping issues to students while communicating with families.  

    • Conducts programs and activities (e.g., in-service training, hearing, vision, and immunization review) to ensure compliance with government-mandated requirements. 

    • Monitors students for health-related factors affecting the learning process, communicates with families and primary care providers and provides significant information to modify the student’s individualized education and health plan as applicable. 

    • Reports suspected child abuse cases to ensure compliance with all related legal requirements.

    •  Provide all staff annual training on CPR procedures, bloodborne pathogens, & Epipen administration.

    • Reports students with contagious diseases to local public health authorities to minimize infection and comply with legal requirements. 

    • Encourages district students to participate in affordable, comprehensive health coverage programs by offering information about coverage to children from low- to moderate-income working families. 

    • Performs other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.

    REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

    • Develop and sustain a comprehensive school health program.

    • Strong communication skills; State and local reports as required

    • Oversee accurate record maintenance

    • Screening procedures for vision, hearing, and scoliosis

    • CPS referral process

    • Maintained CPR/First Aid/AED Certification

    QUALIFICATIONS

    • Bachelor of Science in Nursing

A substitute teacher will support the First Peoples Principles of Learning in their teaching and conduct with students and colleagues. 

    QUALIFICATIONS: 

    ● Valid Washington State Teaching License or valid Substitute Certificate

    ● Demonstrated ability to connect with students, staff and community members in a mutually respectful, supportive and accessible manner. 

    ● Ability to develop, modify, adjust curriculum to meet the individual needs of students.
